Hello and welcome to my very first blog post on this thing.
Today, I want to talk about how the heck I got here because this is not where I ever envisioned myself.
It has been interesting, random, and confusing to say the least. But you know what? I love it.
I graduated from UCSD in June 2016. I was fresh out of college and waiting to somehow, magically, start my career in… Well, I didn’t even know, but I was eager to start.
However, no one wanted to hire me. I don’t even know why I was surprised. That’s the social science life in a nutshell. You spend way too much to MAYBE get a shitty paying job. Naturally, like any good little soc-sci grad, I started prepping for grad school.
Law school to be exact. That is the direction my life is heading and I am very excited to see what happens next but let me tell you, it’s been brutal.
Have any of you taken the LSAT before? That test is ridiculous, and I am up for round two later this year. I am confident and a little scared, but being brave isn’t about not being scared, it is about moving forward even with the fear of god in you, and I am very afraid.
Anyway, back to how I got here and why you are reading this in the first place.
I was managing a small optical office for a year after graduating college, a job I landed thanks to my neighbor being the owner. Thank you, Dr. Moffett! Thank you networking gods!
While I was proud to be good at my job and to have learned so much about optics, I did not EVER want to pursue anything in that field, and I lacked the one true element that makes life worthwhile; passion.
Yup, there was no passion there. The relationship between optical and I had to come to an end. But I was already on the rebound and beginning a budding romance with writing.
I started writing for a fitness web-based lifestyle company in San Diego but was also managing their social media content and everything else that needed to be done.
Now, I ended up being REALLY good at social media and my writing was getting postive responses. Who knew? I loved it.
However, this company didn’t employ me as part of the company but as private contractor (I hadn’t even heard the term before then) and I accidentally became my own business.
Today, it’s just called “Adri Guzman,” but back then it was “I’ll Figure it Out.”
I eventually figured it out and decided the name needed to change. What was I selling, though? Essentially, I was selling myself through my brain power. “Adri Guzman” it was.
Now, while I have my business on the side, I work full time for a marketing agency. There, I work with social media, SEO, and a little bit of everything. I love it!
What have I learned from my 22nd year?
I’ve learned that life can never be planned. We do not know where we are going to be a decade from now or even tomorrow morning.
Life throws hurdles and to get over them, you need use your talents.
Mine happens to be writing and this is where I am in life.
